George M. Steinbrenner III

It was reported this morning that New York Yankees owner and legendary baseball figure George Steinbrenner passed away. Very sad news for the Yankees family, which also lost stadium announcer Bob Shepphard over the weekend.

For as closely tied as Shepphard's voice was to my many Yankee Stadium visits over the years, so too was the presence of George Steinbrenner, the man who built the modern day Yankees empire.

Known simply as The Boss, Steinbrenner's contributions to the Yankees are staggering, and his impact on the game will be felt for decades to come.

Truly the last of the old school owners in the league. I loathe the Yankees but will miss George, you can't replace a character like him.

On another note, if I were Yogi Berra I would be preemptively checking myself into the hospital right about now. These things tend to happen in 3's and better safe than sorry.
